Interactive Terrain Layers

With the interactive terrain layers, you can highlight specific areas based on aspect, slope, and elevation.

With interactive terrain layers, you can highlight specific terrain features based on particular characteristics. You can define which aspect, slope gradient and altitude are relevant to you. All areas that meet these criteria are marked directly on the map.

This feature helps you to better understand the terrain and plan your route accordingly.

How It Works

Interactive terrain layers can be created in the map settings (Layer Selection). The following three parameters can be configured for each layer:

  • Aspect: Use the compass rose to select the desired slope aspects. Multiple aspects can be combined.

  • Slope angle: Use the slider to define the desired slope angle range in degrees.

  • Elevation: The elevation filter allows you to limit the display to specific elevations.

Additionally, you can customize the appearance of the layer. To do this, you can select the color and opacity with which the layer should be displayed.

Use in Tour Planning

Interactive terrain layers can help you in various ways when planning your trip. A typical example is finding safe routes. For instance, if you expect good snow conditions on north-facing slopes but want to avoid steep slopes, you can display all north-facing slopes with a gradient of less than 30 degrees. This helps you identify suitable areas that allow for careful route selection.

Another example of using interactive terrain layers is displaying the elevation and the aspects from the avalanche bulletin on the map.

Example of elevation and aspects from the avalanche bulletin (aspects west via north to east, above 2200 m elevation)

The avalanche danger assessment in this bulletin covers areas with western, northern, and eastern exposures at elevations above 2200 meters

For this, we can now create an interactive terrain layer that marks these areas on the map. This can help you choose and plan tours that are adapted to current conditions.

It is possible to create multiple interactive terrain layers and combine them. For example, you can create layers for different elevation bands to quickly get an overview of an entire region.

Availability

For technical reasons, interactive terrain layers are currently only available in the web version of White Risk and not in the apps.

Interactive terrain layers are available in the following regions: Switzerland, Austria, France, Bavaria, Spain, and Italy.

This means interactive terrain layers are available in many of Europe's ski touring areas, including almost the entire Alpine region, the entire Pyrenees, Corsica, and many other areas.

Interactive terrain layers can be used by all users with a Standard or Pro subscription.
